About the Leadership Development Department The role of the Leadership Development Department is to serve and meet the needs of all DPS administrators-aspiring through the principalship. We believe that the work of our principals is an indispensible driver of improved teacher quality and effectiveness. Our work is focused on supporting our principals, not only to be strong and effective instructional leaders, but to be results-oriented individuals who drive student learning and achievement. Our commitment is built around consistency in school practices, principal action, and leadership structures that are analyzed, refined, and replicated, thus joining together to close the achievement gap. To create a consistently reliable process to develop, recognize and retain effective principals, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has announced an initiative to develop National Board Certification for Principals. Assessment design and program piloting are currently being executed and the target date for the launch of the Certification Program is set for sometime in 2011. Similar to the requirements for teachers, candidates must have at least three years of principal experience to be eligible to participate in the program.
